Johnston Withers Lawyers in Clare

Johnston Withers Lawyers Jason Bell

Once every two years we at Johnston Withers retreat.  No not to meditate, but to learn.  We gather our lawyers from our Adelaide and regional offices, and their families, and meet for a weekend of discussion, seminar presentations, client interaction …….. and great food and wine.

Our most recent retreat was in the beautiful Clare Valley.  We based ourselves in Auburn – where local businesses The Rising Sun Hotel, ASH Catering and Wines by KT provided us with a truly memorable weekend.  While it can be a bit trickier to organise an event like this in a country location we blown away by the way these businesses put their heads together to make sure our experience was seamless and fun.

On Friday night we descended on another local favourite, Mr Mick’s, at Clare for a celebration with our Clare clients.  We had two guest speakers at that event – Jason Bell (a Johnston Withers director and senior lawyer) and The Honorable Greg Crafter (a former MP and now a Johnston Withers consultant).

Jason spoke about the firm’s strong committment to regional South Australia.  With long-standing offices (and local lawyers) in Clare, Port Augusta and Whyalla, and a visiting office in Roxby Downs, we are very proud of our role in serving rural communities. Jason pointed out that many of us, both lawyers and support staff,  hail from the regions, so we understand and respect the both the joys and the challenges of life outside the metropolitan area. Our motto is ‘local knowledge, statewide experience’.   We think it sums us up pretty well.

Greg Crafter’s address was on a broader topic.  He challenged us to consider the ways government might better support economic development in the regions and particularly to consider the role of local government. Greg got us talking and thinking – so much so that his comments were mentioned in Senator Don Farrell’s recent speech in Parliament in Canberra. All in all an enriching, refreshing and rewarding weekend.  Thank you Clare Valley. We will be back.
